"Stop New Overtaking Bans," says RHA
The Road Haulage Association has called on the Highways Agency to halt the implementation of two new overtaking bans on the A1(M), due to come into force on March 28.
The "test" bans on lorry drivers overtaking are southbound, south of junction 63 and near junction 61. The industry was notified of the Agency's intention very late in the planning process.
"The RHA was prepared to accept the original overtaking ban on the M42 on the basis that it was a test. The results of that test should be made known and discussed, as we have requested, before further experimental restrictions are imposed on drivers take place," says Chrys Rampley, RHA manager of infrastructure.
"We had already requested a meeting with the Agency to discuss the effectiveness of these bans and also the detail of implementation, which we regard as unsatisfactory. The fact that the Agency is pressing on with more tests without making known or discussing the results of the test it has already carried out is especially disappointing," she says.
The RHA has also objected to the A14 ban which starts on April 2. It has asked the Agency to add discussion of these bans to a meeting it is holding with representatives of all road users on April 19.
