Scottish Freight Report gets RHA Seal of Approval
The Road Haulage Association welcomes the long-awaited report of the Scottish Executive's Transport Committee Inquiry into Freight Transport in Scotland resulting from a RHA petition.
The Inquiry was established to examine freight transport policy in Scotland, in particular the future prospects for the Scottish road haulage industry.
Phil Flanders, RHA Director for Scotland and Northern Ireland, said: "Scottish hauliers pay more for their fuel than anywhere else in the UK. They also have longer distances to travel to the main markets, which impinge on working time and drivers' hours regulations."
The Committee's report contains a number of very positive proposals, for example, an investigation of the penetration of the market by foreign hauliers, a trial of increased speed limits on certain 'A' class roads and the continuation of some of the training initiatives that have been funded by the Road Haulage Modernisation Fund.
RHA Chief Executive Roger King said: "We acknowledge the fact that the Scottish Executive cannot solve all of these problems on its own. But the Report certainly brings additional pressure to bear on the UK Government to act. This is vindication of the RHA's initiative to submit the petition".
