Digital Tachographs Information Update
Every new in-scope vehicle that has entered service since 1st May 2006 should have been fitted with a digital tachograph vehicle unit. Drivers operating these vehicles must adhere to the additional requirements this new type of recording equipment places upon them.
Make sure sufficient numbers of your drivers apply for their Driver Smart Cards to not only operate digital tachograph fitted trucks on the fleet, but also to cover any trucks hired in.
Any vocational driver (including those Category B holders who can drive up to 7 .5 tonne gvw vehicles) can apply for a Driver Smart Card. Driver Smart Card application forms are available from VOSA testing stations and DVLA offices - MAKE SURE THE DRIVER COMPLETES A 'DRIVER CARD' APPLICATION FORM and not a company card application form!

The digital tachograph is a far more complex device than the analogue tachograph and the authorities will expect in-scope drivers and affected administration staff to have undertaken an appropriate level of introductory training before they are asked to operate and/or administer the digital tachograph. Contact RHA National Training for in-house or open course training by ringing 01733 261456, or e-mail: training@rha.net
Start Preparations For Digi-tac Data Storage Now
Members who are adding new digi-tac fitted trucks to their fleet need to decide how they intend to store the digital tachograph data they will be expected to make available to VOSA on request and which staff should be trained to carry out this new administrative task. Contact the RHA Hauliers Shop for supplies of digi-tac print-out rolls, driver storage pouches and smart card readers by ringing 01733 263434 or e-mail: hauliersshop@rha.net
Start Preparations Digital Tachograph Data Analysis Now
Although operators will eventually not be faced with stacks of completed analogue tachograph charts to check and store, there is still a requirement to ensure that drivers' are complying with the drivers' hours rules and that the data is being analysed and stored chronologically for twelve months, in such a way as to make it easily available for VOSA investigation, if requested. Staff at RHA Tachograph Analysis can give you help and information on how to ensure that you adhere to the new requirements. Telephone: 01733 261131 or e-mail: tachoanalysis@rha.net
